We are a generous people. As Americans, Coloradans, and Puebloans. When there is tragedy we are quick to open our wallets and text our gifts to charities and aid organizations. But is that what is needed?

I grew up in Pueblo. At least once a day, somewhere in Pueblo, someone says that. Some people remember the town during World War II; some remember Crews Beggs on Main Street; some remember Skaggs drug stores, Gibson's department store, Crown Discount Store. But nearly everyone remembers the collapse of the steel industry in the 1980s.

Pueblo has plenty of Italian pizzerias, a fair share of Chinese eateries, a few Japanese dining rooms, and even one or two Mexican cantinas. What we haven't had in awhile - and desperately needed - is an Indian restaurant.

So what does Pueblo's great art say about us? For professional artist, Kim Faiella-Furrh, the owner and lead teacher behind Pueblo's new SAGE Art Academy, it says that our community is unique and vibrant - and willing to include our children in our artistic future.

"There is a very special and engaging mixture of history and new growth here," Ms. Faiella-Furrh believes, "with a renewed wave of motivated and diehard artists and local community members all with the same interest: to develop their beloved town of Pueblo, slowly and methodically maintaining our multi-cultural and historic significance while creating a town filled with art for locals and visitors."
