InsideOut: Pueblo Pride
Want to be a part of the next civil rights movement in America but aren't sure how to start? Or would you just like to come to a place where you can sit back, relax, enjoy some entertainment and just be yourself in the sun? Either way, I have a great suggestion that takes little effort on your part. Make it a point to attend Pueblo Pride this year on Sunday, August 22.
The event boasts food, fun, entertainment, education, service - oh, and open-minded people. Pride is a day for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered community to come together to celebrate and show our pride. But, it's also a time for all community members in Pueblo to come and show support for the cause.
The Southern Colorado Equality Alliance works hard every year to bring the Pueblo Pride event to our community, starting with a parade on Main Street. Every year, this modest show of pride grows bigger and bigger. If you, your business, your organization or even your friends would like to show your pride or support, you are more than welcome to march with us or cheer us on from the sidewalk! If you'd like to be in the parade, please meet at the corner of D Street and Main Street at 10:15 am that morning.
After the parade, the event held around Lake Elizabeth, right off of Victoria Avenue, on the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk, will kick off at 11:00 am, with live entertainment all day long. Mark's Midnight Carnival Show promises to keep the crowd rocking, while the United Court of the Pikes Peak Empire will keep you dancing the rest of the day! While you're there, enjoy some good food from Pass Key, or pick up some great art from one of the many local artists who will be joining the festivities.
After the event, SCEA will host a free movie with food and refreshments at the Rawlings Public Library at 5:30 pm that evening. The Gypsy House Players, in conjunction with the Gold Dust Saloon have also signed on to entertain you that night. If you missed it last year, do yourself a favor and don't miss this year. The Gypsy House Players are a great comedic group that will be sure to entertain you with their special burlesque show!
Also new to the event this year, SCEA, with the help of the Gill Foundation, is re-introducing "Outfront," Pueblo's LGBT youth group. It is evident every year at pride that Pueblo is in severe need for a youth group for our LGBT kids. This year SCEA will host a booth full of information, a list of meeting times, give-a-ways, and a chance to sign up to participate in or facilitate a group. Check next month's article here in P.U.L.P. for more information on the official "Outfront" kick-off party!
