LGBT Rights=Human RightsChange is upon us every day, but never in the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights has change ever been so abundant and obvious. I am proud and excited to say that when it comes to measurable change, the last decade has been the most progressive in the fight for equality for the LGBT community. A report from the United Nations points out that 76 countries retain laws criminalizing people for sexual orientation and gender identity; people who are gay or assumed to be gay are arrested, beaten, terrorized, and even executed. In at least five countries, the punishment for engaging in gay relations is the death penalty. I acknowledge that, while living in America, I still don't have full and equal rights as a gay citizen. I can't even imagine the fear and isolation millions feel in other parts of the world. |

When we talk about '60's counter-culture, The Haight or Woodstock is what usually comes to mind. However, our area should get its due, considering that Drop City, the first rural artist commune established in the mid '60s, was right here in Southern Colorado. An exhibit highlighting some Colorado artists, past and present, that shared similar sensibilities as those '60's hippies, is currently on view at CSU-Pueblo's art gallery. Droppers, Drifters and Anti-Designers, organized by faculty-member, Caroline Peters, is an adventurous introduction to our own hippie history.
