Honoring Susan Wolf, Founding Publisher of Pueblo P.U.L.P.
As we launch the January 2012 issue of P.U.L.P. (the first under new publishers, John Rodriguez and Jonathan Almanzar), we would like to publicly acknowledge the vast accomplishments of Susan Wolf, the founder and original publisher of P.U.L.P., in creating Pueblo's first alternative newspaper and laying the groundwork for it to continue.
Four years ago the thought of Pueblo having an alternative newspaper was a pipe dream - perhaps even comical. We weren't that kind of town; there wouldn't be any support for it. Who would advertise in it? Who would read it? It was a foregone conclusion that Pueblo just wasn't - maybe never would be - ready for that. Susan had a different opinion. She looked at Pueblo and saw possibilities instead of limitations. When Susan moved here from Chicago and couldn't find a local alternative paper to read, she started P.U.L.P.
Susan gathered a few of her friends to launch P.U.L.P. and proved that our City not only had room for more than one editorial viewpoint, it wanted it. And while presenting a point of view is as easy as starting a blog these days, Susan took a different route, setting up a business, recruiting contributors, and doing it all on a shoestring budget, much from her own pocket.
According to her very small staff and large group of volunteers in the P.U.L.P. project, Susan is a "role model of power and grace." Her devotion to the project and the people who worked with her was characterized by "poise, dignity and an unwavering vision." And her leadership style has an "honesty and integrity" that helped everyone feel appreciated and invested in P.U.L.P.
Susan has left big shoes to fill as we strive to build on the significant accomplishments she achieved with her original team. We will do our utmost. We wish her continuing success in her new endeavors and hope that Pueblo is honored with her presence and involvement in the community for many years to come.
